Dress Codes for Every Type of Wedding Guest — Champagne & Savings

White Tie: This is the most formal of the formals. For women, this means a full-length ball gown and appropriate accessories like gloves and evening jewelry. For men, a black tailcoat, white-tie wedding attire includes a formal white shirt, black vest, and black bow tie.

Black Tie: This is a formal affair. Women should opt for formal floor-length gowns, while men should wear a tuxedo with a black bow tie and patent leather shoes.

Black Tie Optional / Formal: This gives you a bit more flexibility. A floor-length dress or a fancy cocktail dress is perfect for women. Men can wear a tuxedo or a dark suit with a tie.

Cocktail Attire: A favorite for many summer weddings and receptions. Women should go for cocktail wedding guest dresses that are knee-length or midi. Men can stick with a dark suit and tie. It’s a bit dressy but not too over the top.

Semi-Formal / Dressy Casual: Ideal for daytime weddings or more relaxed venues. A sophisticated cocktail dress or a nice formal pantsuit works well. Men should wear dress pants, a dress shirt, and optional blazer.

Casual Attire: Think casual maxi dresses or lighter colors in natural fabrics for women. Men can wear khaki pants, polos, or button-downs. Avoid tank tops, sneakers, or jeans unless explicitly allowed.

Beach or Destination Wedding: Dress for the tropical location. For women, that means breathable fabrics, bright or lighter colors, and dressy sandals. Men can wear dress pants or linen trousers with a button-down.

Barn Venue or Outdoor Wedding: Expect gravel or grass, so skip the stilettos. Flowy dresses or a little black dress with wedges work great. For men, go with a button-down, dress pants, and loafers.

Religious Center: Some places may require modest attire. Cover your shoulders or knees, depending on the tradition. A floor-length evening gown with a shawl is perfect for formal ceremonies.

Cultural Considerations: If you’re attending a wedding with specific cultural traditions, do a little research on appropriate attire. Some cultures have color restrictions (e.g., white or red may be symbolic), or traditional garments may be encouraged. When in doubt, ask the couple or a family member what’s most respectful. It’s a meaningful way to honor their heritage and show you care.
