Honey Garlic Shrimp

Shrimp is one of my favorite lean protein options for meals.  Not only is it so versatile in regards to flavor combinations, it is super fast to prepare.  When you are a busy mom in the kitchen, a fast meal is a must.

This recipe makes cooking a meal from scratch easier than ever to accomplish!  Grab shrimp when on sale so you always have it in the freezer to whip this recipe up in minutes!

Tip:  Place raw shrimp into a freezer bag with the marinade before freezing.  When you pull it out of the freezer the night before cooking, it will allow it to marinade as it thaws in the refrigerator.

How to Clean Shrimp Before Cooking

The most important thing to do before you cook shrimp is to make sure it has been properly cleaned.  Whether you are cooking without the shell, like for this recipe, or making a shrimp boil, you still need to clean the shrimp before cooking.

To clean shrimp you will not only want to run under cool water to remove any dirt, but also to slice along the outside center where there is a dark line following the curve of the shrimp.  This line is actually the shrimp intestinal tract. Slicing and pulling the “vein” from the shrimp removes any digestive particles and remaining dirt.

Tip: Look for shrimp labeled as deveined, or request that it be deveined at the seafood counter before purchase.

How to Cook Shrimp

Shrimp is an easy meat to prepare because it takes very little time.  The only problem people have with shrimp is typically over cooking. It is very simple to make sure your shrimp is perfectly cooked.

To begin, make sure that your pan is set to high heat and is hot when you place the shrimp in to cook.  A hot skillet will ensure they cook fast and do not become tough. The shrimp need to be placed in an even single layer in the skillet and allowed to sear for 1-2 minutes before flipping.  You will know they are ready when they don’t stick to the pan.

Once you flip the shrimp over, you will notice that they have curled into themselves and begun turning a pinkish orange color.  To determine when they are completely cooked, you will want to watch the outside of the shrimp where the vein was, to see it turn from translucent to opaque.  This indicates they are cooked through and ready to remove from the heat.

  3. Remove shrimp from marinade, discard marinade.

  4. Cook a couple of minutes on each side until cooked through.

  5.  Add in rest of marinade and cook an additional minute.

How to Reheat Honey Garlic Shrimp Leftovers

While I doubt you will have leftovers since this recipe is just so delicious, it is important to know how to reheat shrimp without it getting too tough. You also want to make sure that shrimp is heated through.  While it is safe to eat cold shrimp such as steamed or boiled shrimp (think peel and eat variety), in a recipe such as this one, you want the shrimp reheated to a safe temperature.

The two easiest ways to reheat are either in the microwave or on the stove top.  If reheating in the microwave, I recommend covering and heating on high for 30-seconds.  Check to see if they have reached the temperature you desire, and place back into the microwave for an additional 30 seconds at a time.

When heating on the stove top, you want your pan to be hot when you pour the leftovers into the pan. Stir continually until it is just heated through.
